KINGSTON, Jamaica ? A Canadian couple, their toddler son and his Jamaican grandmother have been killed in a head-on collision with a truck while they tried to rush the feverish child to a hospital, police said Thursday.
A Jamaican police statement said the Canadian family and the boy's grandmother were driving Wednesday in a Toyota Corolla when they collided with a truck traveling in the opposite direction.
Police said the family from the Toronto area and the grandmother were pronounced dead at a hospital. The truck driver was uninjured.
John Babcock, a spokesman for Canadian Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Diane Ablonczy, said in an email to The Associated Press that "our thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends of those killed in this tragic accident."
Consular officials in Jamaica can provide assistance to the victims' relatives, according to Babcock.
Killed in the wreck were Garieno and Diane Dixon, 2-year-old Nichile, and grandmother Marie Myrie-Phillips, according to local media.
The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper reported that Garieno Dixon, a 27-year-old construction worker, apparently tried to overtake a line of traffic on a roadway and crashed into the truck.
Myrie-Smith's husband, Gerald, told the Gleaner that Nichile had been in Jamaica since September and had started to develop respiratory problems. He said doctors told the family that he "was not asthmatic but there was something blocking his airway and he needed surgery."
Police are still investigating the deadly crash.
