While I didn?t have a chance to stay there, I just knew that I had to visit the Disney resort and have a meal there during my trip home to Hawai?i. I thought about eating at Makahiki buffet, but after reading some good reviews of lunch at ?Ama ?Ama, I decided to try it out.

Pre-Lunch Visit to Off the Hook Pool Bar
When we first arrived at 11:10 AM, my mom and I were told that they were closed and didn?t have any openings until 12:45 PM. I was a bit surprised, but we took the time to wander about the resort.
The first thing we did was head next door to the Off the Hook Pool Bar. The pool bar is right next to the restaurant and offers food and drinks, but of course, we were just there for the drinks.
It is a little thatched roofed, open air hut with a good number of seats and tables.

My mom decided on the ?Alaea-rita and really enjoyed it. I had a taste of it as well, and thought it was very refreshing. ?Alaea refers to the pink sea salt used to rim the glass. Other than that, it was really your standard margarita.

I decided on the Liliko?i Mojito. Let me preface this by saying that I rarely drink alcohol, but decided to try it. For me, it tasted a bit too strongly of rum. It was sweet, but I couldn?t really detect very much Liliko?i, or even lime or mint for that matter. The drinks will run you $9 to $10.

After doing some shopping at the gift store and meandering about the resort property, we headed back to ?Ama?Ama at around 12:15 to see if they could seat us. Fortunately, they were able to take us to a table right away.

Unlike the rest of Aulani, some of which I find to be fun but over-the-top, the restaurant is decorated minimally. The design is another open-air, thatched-roof hut, while the blue murals on the walls mimic the ocean. I found the entire setting calm and relaxing.

Of course, it?s really all about the view. Now, while it is beach side, the restaurant is not right next to the ocean?s edge. But who cares? The view of the beach is amazing.

One of the reasons that I decided to eat lunch here was because the prices were much more affordable than dinner. Not cheap, mind you, but still reasonable for a nice resort/hotel restaurant.

I will say that the service was wonderful and attentive ? that is, until dessert. Then it seemed like they stopped paying attention to us, taking a good amount of time for us to get refills and the check. Still, they were very friendly.
My mom and I decided to share an appetizer and chose the Crispy Curried Chicken Firecracker with Mango Gastrique. When it came out, we were surprised to see it was sort of like a coconut chicken curry spring roll. It was absolutely delicious. The chicken filling was flavorful while the mango gastrique served as a nice counter to the slight spiciness.

For my entree, I ordered the Kalua-roasted Pulled Pork Sandwich. ?Kalua? means ?the pit,? referring to the method by which pork was traditionally cooked.
Now, having had lots of kalua pig when I grew up in Hawai?i, I can say that this pork was good, not great. It was a bit under-seasoned for my taste; however, what made the dish great were the Chinese steamed buns and the different toppings for each little slider.
From left to right, the tiny buns were topped with pickled onions, kim chee, and chopped lomi tomato (?lomi? means massage, so the tomatoes are ?massaged,? or rather, chopped finely with onions). They each provided a nice surprise to accompany the roast pork flavor. The sweet potato fries were also very good.

My mom ordered the Ahi Nicoise Salad. She said the salad was ?so good,? in her own words. She especially loved the tuna, even though she rarely eats rare seared tuna ? she usually eats it completely raw or completely cooked from the can. I didn?t try any of her salad, but it seriously looked fresh and appetizing, and I don?t even eat fish!

After our entrees, we had saved room for dessert. Well, to be honest, we ALWAYS have room for dessert.
Though we were intrigued by the Floating Island, we opted for the Chocolate Cake. The presentation was absolutely beautiful, and this was delicious.
I guess I?m not used to fancy desserts, because this was more like a thick mousse in the shape of a cake. But the coffee cream perfectly complimented the chocolate flavor.

Every time I visit home in Hawai?i, I make a list of favorite places that I must eat?local Hawai?i food that I can?t find anywhere else. And even with the many great meals at my old favorites, my lunch at ?Ama?Ama still was one of the most memorable meals. In fact, it was probably one of the best Disney Dining Experiences I have ever had. (It helped that my mom footed the bill, too).
The food and the view were great, each with the perfect touch of Hawaii. The price was not too bad for lunch, either. Next time I visit Hawai?i, I definitely plan on adding ?Ama?Ama to my list.
And seriously, just look at that view.

YANGON, Myanmar ??A thumping rock and hip hop beat, entranced teenagers clutching beer cans, hundreds of people smiling happily ? it sure wasn't the Myanmar I am used to.
I've had plenty of memorable experiences in Myanmar, most of them unpleasant. I've been kicked out of the country by officials not once, but twice.
In 2007, when journalists were forbidden from covering the so-called "Saffron Uprising," I posed as a tourist to get into the country and played cat-and-mouse with the security forces to grab some footage when escalating political protests, initially led by monks, were crushed by the military. I watched soldiers beat cowering Burmese men and women with batons on the streets of the capital. It was an exceptionally dangerous time: a Japanese journalist was among those killed.?

The following year I was back again to cover the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis.? I saw people who literally lost everything ? I remember one man who was clutching photographs of his wife and children to help officials find their corpses. Reporters were banned from the whole cyclone-hit area, so again we had to film in secret. Eventually our team was spotted, and police later tracked me down to a hotel in the capital and threw me out of the country.

During all of my previous trips, most people I met were terrified to talk, fearing they could be jailed just for speaking to a journalist. Even the guide who took me to the barricaded house where pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was imprisoned begged me not to take photographs, saying it could put him in danger.
So it was wonderful to be able to move freely around Yangon during my last visit, and to find optimistic people unafraid to talk. That alone showed me how profoundly things have changed already.

This time I was there on Dec. 2, 2011,? the same day U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Suu Kyi. I went to a huge rock concert, and I had a lot of fun.

Myanmar has stagnated for decades under the oppressive rule of a paranoid military dictatorship, but over the past year the country has suddenly started to make progress toward greater democracy and freedom of expression ? and more tolerance of rock and hip hop.
So I found myself at a nearly-sold-out concert at an indoor stadium in Yangon. Burmese stars belted out rock and hip hop tunes to an audience of girls in tight skirts and young men in skinny jeans, instead of the traditional sarongs usually worn in the country.
The music was full of energy, and got me moving, but there was little boisterous enthusiasm and dancing among the audience ? most stayed seated, tapping their feet and nodding their heads to the music.
They were mostly rich kids, teenagers who arrived at the stadium in expensive cars while poor children in tattered clothes collected garbage around the stadium.
?Only rich or middle class people can afford to buy a ticket as you have to spend at least 50 kyats ($7),? a Burmese friend told me. That would be cheap for a concert in most countries, but Myanmar remains mired in poverty and most people earn just a few dollars a day.
There were still plenty of reminders of the old repressive Myanmar: the atmosphere at the concert was not helped by the presence of several stern-looking armed guards.
Singing for change
Backstage the celebrity musicians were hanging out before the concert started, and I met the hip hop group ACID in their room. Their first album, also Myanmar?s first hip hop album, was the country?s best seller in 2000.? But their non-traditional style, lack of deference for authority and controversial lyrics about the hardships of life in Myanmar eventually got them in trouble.
??Our music was new to people. The government doesn?t like us because we did not follow the traditional style,? said Anegga, a 32-year-old ACID band member who goes by one name.
Two of the band's members were arrested in 2008 for allegedly illegal political activities. One of them, Zayar Thaw, 32, was dressed in shorts, a tee-shirt, a baseball cap and his arms were covered with tattoos ? not exactly the traditional Myanmar ideal of a quiet, well-behaved young man.??

He was released from prison in May, and told me he still has to watch his words. ?I have to be careful about saying things now, Big Brother is watching.??
But now, the band is back together and ACID is performing again. They are among more than 50 musicians and singers who have pledged their support for the election campaign of Suu Kyi, who has been released after years of house arrest and is now running for a seat in parliament.?
Suu Kyi's musical supporters are producing a special album, with songs designed to raise awareness about politics and encourage people to stand up for their rights. One of the songs contributed by ACID asks: ?How can I talk, How can I see, If you close my eyes and ears??
The musicians hope their songs can help push the boundaries and educate people in their country after 49 years of censorship and military rule.
?Everything for Aung San Suu Kyi, we love to do it for her. We love her,? said female pop singer Than That Win.
After elections in November 2010, which were widely condemned as rigged, Myanmar's ruling generals exchanged their uniforms for civilian suits ? but few expected much to change.
Then beginning in October of this year, the government introduced a series of dizzying changes: The new government led by a former general, Thein Sein, eased censorship, released political prisoners, introduced a limited right to strike and protest, and started a dialogue with the Suu Kyi.
The United States has shown its support for the political reforms ? Clinton was in town when the concert was held, to see the progress for herself.
Like many Burmese, the musicians worry that the recent changes could be a false dawn. They are optimistic, but still wary.
??This is the beginning of change in the country," Anegga told me. "We hope nobody will be arrested this time.????

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? McDonald's Corp. said Monday it will require its U.S. pork suppliers to provide plans by May to phase out crates that tightly confine pregnant sows, a move that one animal rights group predicted would have "a seismic impact" on the industry.
The U.S. pork industry generates sales of about $21 billion a year, according to the National Pork Producers Council. McDonald's, with its Sausage McMuffin, McRib sandwich and breakfast platters, is one of the largest U.S. buyers of pork products, consuming about 1 percent of the nation's total production.
The fast food chain announced its decision in a joint statement with the Humane Society of the United States, which hailed it as a major victory in its fight against so-called gestation crates. The animal welfare group has been pushing legislation in several states to outlaw the crates that severely limit animals' movement.
"I think it's going to have a seismic impact on the pork industry because it signals to every other major food retailer that this is the morally correct pathway, but it's also an economically feasible pathway," said Wayne Pacelle, the Humane Society's CEO.
Many of McDonald's competitors, including Burger King, Wendy's and Hardee's, have already begun to move away from suppliers who use gestation crates, and the fast food chain's announcement came a day after Chipotle Mexican Grill made a splash with a nearly two-and-a-half minute television commercial aired during the Grammy's and touting its ban on pork produced using the crates.
The commercial, an animated short film featuring the Coldplay song "The Scientist" sung by Willie Nelson, was released online in August. It features a farmer who experiences a crisis of conscience, prompting him to abandon factory-like farming methods and free his pigs, chickens and cows from confinement. It had more than 4.6 million views on YouTube by Monday afternoon.
"We are changing the way people think about and eat fast food," Steve Ells, founder, chairman and co-CEO of Chipotle, said in a statement. "We have always understood the importance of serving food that is raised right, but that is a difficult thing to communicate with the limitations of traditional advertising."
Unlike Chipotle, McDonald's is not ending its relationship with suppliers who use gestation crates.
"We're really looking to see a positive change regarding moving away from gestation stalls, and we think the best way to do that is working with our suppliers," McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa McComb said. "They're the ones that actually have to take action to make this happen."
Some of McDonald's suppliers and other major pork producers have already announced plans to phase out gestation crates.
Smithfield Foods Inc., the world's largest pork producer, and Hormel Foods Corp. have both said they would stop using them at company-owned farms by 2017. Cargill Inc. says it has already widely adopted group housing for pregnant sows.
McDonald's said it is seeking reports from all its suppliers by May on measures being taken to end the use of gestation crates. After a review, it will decide how to proceed.
Even such a cautious approach was welcomed by animal rights groups, given McDonald's huge buying power. Nathan Runkle, executive director of Mercy For Animals, a Chicago-based nonprofit animal rights group, said he hoped the company would take a similar approach with egg suppliers, who often keep chickens in similar cramped cages.
"They do have the power to move an entire industry, to set an example that other food providers often follow," Runkle said. "We hope it's the beginning of the end of these cruel and abusive practices."
Pig farmers keep pregnant sows in gestation crates in an effort to reduce aggressive behavior by separating them from other hogs and feeding them individually.
The National Pork Producers Council, which has been concerned about the possibility of federal legislation limiting farming practices, said studies have shown individual and group housing can provide good care for sows. Turkmen strongman leader set for easy election win (AP)
ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan ? At one polling station in Turkmenistan, loudspeakers blared out a song Sunday praising the nation's protector, which is how the president has now come to be known.
That sort of fulsome and pervasive adulation is why Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov will likely have brushed aside his seven opponents in a presidential election aimed largely at cementing his hold on power over the authoritarian Central Asian nation.
All of Berdymukhamedov's nominal opponents have made praise for his leadership a central plank of their campaigns.
Berdymukhamedov, a 54-year-old trained dentist, was elected to his first term with 89 percent of the vote in 2007, weeks after the sudden death of his eccentric, iron-fisted predecessor, Saparmurat Niyazov.
He came to power in the energy-rich former Soviet nation amid hopes of a gradual loosening of the closed political system, but those expectations have largely been dashed.
Turkmenistan is the subject of avid interest from the West, Russia and China for its natural gas reserves, which are estimated to be the fourth largest in the world.
While the field of contenders is broad, none of Berdymukhamedov's election rivals ? all of them government officials ? have explicitly asked Turkmens to vote for them.
Candidates have addressed rallies in packed halls across the country against a backdrop of large posters of Berdymukhamedov.
The only person participating in anything that could pass for genuine campaigning has been the president himself. Berdymukhamedov has been crisscrossing the country of 5 million people unveiling major building projects, which include the construction of multiple wedding halls, known as Palaces of Happiness, bazaars, five-star hotels and major roads in every provincial center in Turkmenistan.
Berdymukhamedov is a ubiquitous feature in the national media and no other candidate has anything remotely approaching his public profile.
"Our family is all voting for the current president. We haven't even heard of any of the other candidates," said a 21-year-old flower salesman, Toty, declining to give his surname as is common in a country where people can incur retribution for speaking to reporters.
Although salaries hover around $200 per month, many in Turkmenistan benefit from the highly subsidized economy, which has ensured an avoidance of the kind of unrest that has led to the overthrow of authoritarian leaders across the Middle East.
"I am voting for the current president. He has made transport practically free for retirees," said 76-year-old Ashgabat resident Ninel Belgisova.
Household gas, water and electricity are all provided free. Families also receive monthly rations of salt.
Berdymukhamedov has eschewed the personality cult that defined the rule of his predecessor, Niyazov, whose gold-leaf statues littered the country and who was known officially as Turkmenbashi ? the Father of All Turkmens.
But in a sign of Berdymukhamedov's increasingly immovable stature, state media have taken to referring to him as Arkadag ? Turkmen for "protector."
At one polling station at a bread factory, girls in traditional dress danced in a mild snowfall as speakers blared out a song hailing the Arkadag.
Berdymukhamedov cast his vote together with his father, Myalikguli, after whom a police unit was named earlier this month. That gesture was reminiscent of the Niyazov-era practice of naming streets and public organizations after the leader's parents.
The only element of suspense in Sunday's election is whether Berdymukhamedov will garner more or less support from the country's 3 million voters than he managed in 2007. Exit polls are banned.
Turnouts are traditionally very high in Turkmenistan, as in many former Soviet nations, where voters have been eager to avoid attracting unwanted official attention by snubbing the electoral process.
Official data showed relatively low voter turnout in the first half of the day. By the time polling stations closed, however, turnout had reached 96 percent.
Without independent scrutiny, there is no clear way of establishing whether official figures are accurate.
The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's election-monitoring arm said conditions were not suitable for a monitoring mission and that in any case Turkmenistan never invited its observers.
Election officials are expected to unveil preliminary results midday Monday.
